Darrell Limuel

Darrell grew up in Round Rock, Texas, as the youngest of four children and the only boy. He graduated from Cedar Ridge High School in 2013, where he earned first-team all-area recognition and an honorable mention as a defensive back during his senior year. He continued his playing career as a walk-on at Texas Tech University for two years. Darrell has also coached and mentored Austin-area athletes ranging from second grade through the early college level.

After hanging up his cleats, Darrell picked up the pencil. He transferred to Texas State University and committed himself to his passion for writing. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 2018 before returning to earn his Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing as a member of the poetry cohort. During his graduate studies, he began developing his poetry manuscript, Birth of a Gentleman. His poems have appeared in several respected literary publications, including Black Warrior Review and Rattle.

Darrell began his college teaching career as a graduate instructional assistant and worked his way up to becoming a Professor of Instruction at Texas State. He has taught college writing at both San Marcos and Round Rock campuses, leading online courses, and has worked with students through the University Writing Center. Before joining AESA, Darrell taught high school English at the Griffin School in Austin. During his time there, he taught literature, creative writing, and digital music courses while helping students develop their confidence, creativity, and individual voices. Darrell has also taught creative writing to students from second through twelfth grade through Badgerdog Creative Writing Camps and the Austin Public Library Foundation. In addition, he has served as a mentor for young writers pursuing the Austin Youth Poet Laureate honor. He brings an authentic passion for writing, teaching, mentorship, and helping students recognize the power of their own voices.

Outside of the classroom, Darrell DJs throughout the Austin area, competes in poetry slams, attends as many sporting events as possible, and remains a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan. He loves community running events, and also leads Run Your Race Collective, a fitness community built around encouragement, personal growth, and pursuing individual goals together. One of his long-term goals is to compete in the Boston Marathon!
